There is a growing demand for health information system that reflects on compliance and quality of patient care. Health Information Systems can enable patients to manage their personal information from their personal computers, phones and the internet.
A research project proposal presentation by Mr. Anal Kumar focused on
research regarding the development of health informatics in Fiji. Mr.
Kumar is a Postgraduate Diploma student in Information Technology at
the University of Fiji and a tutor at the Fiji National University.
This research initiative is part of Dr. Rohitash Chandra’s research
focus which is bundled together with research in Artificial
Intelligence and Robotics. Dr. Chandra is the principle investigator
for “Health Informatics Research in Fiji” at UniFiji and hopes to
get more postgraduate research students on board.
“Information technology has influenced everything except the medical
field, therefore, information system is needed to enhance medical
experience for both patients and practitioners,” said Mr. Kumar. He
proposed to develop a software application using open source software
that would replace the manual system of prescription with an
electronic system.

The main ‘actors’ of this system would be the patients, doctors and
the pharmacists. The doctors would enter the prescription in the
patients account and submit it. Then instead of printing the
prescription and taking it to the pharmacy, the patient would give the
pharmacist their ID and the pharmacist would be able to read the
patients prescription and provide the medications. The patients will
be able to make or cancel their appointments as well. This system
would also have the patient’s medical history which would be
accessible to the doctors and any other authorised party anywhere in
the world which for be of benefit to travelling patients and those
migrating overseas.
The system could later be expended to incorporate more features like
the police–criminal record and overseas travel record which would be
very useful if a person’s medical history needs to be known.
Nevertheless, the privacy of the patients data would be maintained
since the actors, especially the pharmacists, would only be able to
access certain information about the particular patients only.
Once developed, the system would be simple to use and will be
available through the Internet and would enhance people’s medical
experience.
